Sill decks for greater anti-slip protection

Sill decks from BUG are window sill covers made of aluminium with deep grooves. For floor-to-ceiling windows, for example balcony and terrace exits, the sill deck is combined with a window sill and a suitable substructure that makes the sill safe to walk on. It also has anti-slip properties that reinforce the safety features of the sill

Benefits of the sill deck for windows, balcony and patio doors

  • Secure grip in wet, frosty and snowy conditions thanks to deep grooves (corrugations)
  • Simple and practical retrofitting possible
  • Quick and easy replacement of the aluminium sill deck possible
  • Permanent sealing function to the facade
  • Wear protection of the window sill
  • Protects the window sill from weathering due to weather influences
  • Reinforces the window sill system against loads
  • Low cleaning and maintenance requirements
Sill deck for non-slip window sills
Thanks to deep grooves, the window sill with a BUG sill deck and a suitable substructure becomes a walk-on window sill.

Installation of sill decks: What needs to be taken into account?

Before you begin installation, choose the right balcony exit profile or terrace exit. Choose

  • thewidth: 150 mm or 210 mm
  • the length: up to 6,000 mm
  • and a suitable surface: untreated as a press-finished blank or with an anodised surface

The shape can be custom-fitted, which means that the sill decks can be used according to individual requirements. Just ensure that the distance to the window sill edges is maintained so that the surface water can be drained laterally over the serrated plate. In addition, the weather drip of the step protection profile should overlap, otherwise there is a risk that it will come loose later.

If the projection is over 150 mm, you will need additional brackets to strengthen the attachment of the sill deck. To install, remove the protective film from the window sill and screw on the balcony exit profile or terrace exit.

The BUG sill deck can be flexibly adapted to the window sill and is easy to install.
Good to know

You can attach the sill deck independently of shutters, pleats or roller shutters. The closing function is not affected by the window sill attachment.

Two-fold benefits: sill decks protect facades and window sills

Sill decks not only provide protection against slipping. They also benefit for the window sill itself.

  • They serve as an excellent reinforcement for the window sill and protect both the facade and the window sill from loads of any kind.
  • Aluminium adapts to temperature-related movements and thus prevents visible damage to the masonry.
  • Sill decks from BUG impress with their high-quality workmanship and modern design and thus form a visual unit with the facade.

An additional benefit: BUG deck sills and terrace exits require little cleaning and maintenance.

Easy retrofitting of balcony exit profiles and terrace exits

Anti-slip protection for balcony exit profiles and terrace exits should be taken into account when planning a new build. However, even if window sills have already been installed, sill decks can be subsequently attached or replaced without damaging the facade or plaster. Simple installation saves you time and money.

The prerequisite for smooth retrofitting is a 5-degree gradient in the window sill, the sealing elements and the window sill edges and connectors. If installed incorrectly, water will penetrate, which will cause damage to the window sill and facade.

Anti-slip window sills with water tightness under heavy rain

The goal when installing window sills is to protect the building envelope.. For this reason, water tightness under heavy rain is always given top priority. And this should be no different when it comes to the installation of balcony exit profiles and terrace exits. The best way to achieve this is to use a coordinated window sill system in which all components have been tested for water tightness under heavy rain.

The BUG System 500 offers you exactly that – safety for all weather conditions. From the technically sophisticated A 500 V sliding closure or A 600 GS ETICS closure, and flexible HS 500 window sill brackets, plug-in solutions such as the P 500 pillar recess or the H 500 D butt connector to the AD 500 screw-on seal – when combined, the result is an unbeatable team. Although the sill deck can also be installed on other conventional aluminium window sills, we recommend the secure solution in System 500, where the sealing function is retained.

The sill decks can be integrated with all standard BUG system components: In addition to window sills, this also includes window sill edges, corners and connectors.

FAQ: Questions about sill decks for windows

Below you will find answers to the most important questions about the sill decks from BUG. We provide detailed information on other window sill components in our FAQs about window sill systems.

Yes, you can adjust the length as needed. When it comes to the projection, two dimensions are available: 150 or 210 millimetres.

To install the BUG sill deck on a window sill, you must

  • Ensure that the window sill has a 5-degree slope.
  • Maintain the distance to the sides.
  • Check that the weather drip overlaps.
  • Apply the sealant continuously into the mounting groove.
  • Secure using A2 sheet metal screws or waterproof aluminium rivets.

You can install the BUG sill decks for windows on any aluminium window sills. However, the sealing function is only guaranteed in combination with the BUG components of System 500 and when installed professionally.

The use of the sill deck is only possible on sills with a sill projection of at least 150 mm.

The load capacity of the balcony exit profile or the terrace exit depends on the substructure. Depending on the type of use, the specifications for the substructure, the window sill and the sill deck must be determined and included in the planning and implementation.

Check the standards and guidelines for a walkable window sill for the following conditions, for example:

  • Slip-resistant design
  • Water-repellent steps and platforms in accordance with DIN guidelines
  • Workplace guidelines
  • BG facade cleaning specifications
  • Number of persons and standard total weight
  • Maximum permissible deflection
  • and others

You can only determine and guarantee the load capacity through technically correct planning and implementation.

Clean the sill deck once it has been installed. To do this, use warm water and gentle, chlorine-free cleaning agents and, if necessary, paint cleaners or paint polishes. Avoid abrasive, scouring agents to avoid damaging the surface of the sill deck.
