Multiple options for combining aluminium window sills

The aluminium window sills STANDARD and SOFTLINE PLUS are suitable for installation in single or multi-layered walls with all the standard facade materials, such as brick, concrete, natural stone or plaster facades and for thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) and other types of cladding. All window frame materials (such as wood, wood-aluminium, plastic, all-aluminium) can be used with BUG aluminium window sills..

We recommend installing our aluminium window sills in combination with the other components of the BUG window sill system 500. This gives you a tested and certified sill solution that ensures water tightness under heavy rain.

Sealing window sills to the outside

STANDARD and SOFTLINE PLUS aluminium window sills are designed to protect buildings in the area of window and door openings from weather and environmental influences. To ensure this, the connections between the aluminium window sills and the windows must be tight with good slide properties. It is thus essential to use suitable sealing systems, such as the Butyl shaped gasket piece DFT 40, and to perform the installation correctly.

Secure hold with BUG window sills

To ensure quick and easy installation of the BUG window sills in both versions, all BUG window sills have elongated holes on the screw plate measuring a depth of 300 mm. The elongated holes in the BUG aluminium window sills STANDARD and SOFTLINE PLUS enable the fastening screws, including the special sealing disk and cover cap, to be inserted securely while simultaneously giving the window sill a secure and stable hold..

Installing aluminium window sills as a whole system

Aluminium window sills that are intended to be stepped on require special substructures. They must be planned and executed according to the building construction. When installing the aluminium window sills, a drainage incline of at least 5° must be observed and maintained so that proper drainage continues to be guaranteed after installation. Sound-dampening strips to reduce the noise from rain or water drops are recommended.

Tested edge profiles to match the aluminium window sill

The window sill should have an appropriately shaped weather drip so that the water does not run back on the underside of the window sill, but drips off the facade at a safe distance.

To ensure that no water can penetrate the side of the facade or the masonry, we recommend using a corresponding BUG compact, standard or sliding side closure such as the A 500 V.

The A 500 V sliding closure in particular is easy and safe to install on window sills in accordance with the guidelines. This closure, also called an edge profile, forms the connection to the plaster (plaster base) and can absorb and compensate for the changes in length (expanding and shrinking caused by temperature fluctuations) of the aluminium window sill. BUG sliding closures are particularly noted for their reliability, durability and ease of installation in the proven window sill system.

Connect external window sills securely and easily with window sill joins

From a maximum total or individual length of 3,000 mm, you should divide aluminium window sills and connect them using a butt connector such as the H 500 D or an internal and external corner connector such as A 500 D 90° and I 500 D 90°.

The corner and butt connectors, tested for water tightness under heavy rain to 1,950 Pa, absorb the thermal linear expansion of the aluminium window sill and prevent the window sills from warping. They also protect against plaster cracks. Above all, the dual flexible sealing technology in the combination of aluminium butt connector and corner vulcanised EPDM seal delivers tested and certified safety. This means that window sill joints are connected easily, quickly and securely.

Making aluminium window sills walkable

Standard aluminium window sills are not suitable for walking on with ETICS. Here, an appropriate substructure needs to be planned. There is also a risk of slipping when walking on balconies and terraces. The aluminium window sill needs to be secured with a precisely fitting, weather-resistant sill deck. This must be screwed directly onto the window sill, which means it can also be easily retrofitted.

FAQs about aluminium window sills

Find out more about aluminium window sills. Questions about technical aspects as well as installation and mounting can be found in our FAQs about window sill systems.

Aluminium window sills have several benefits. They are:

  • Lightweight yet sturdy,
  • Almost completely recyclable,
  • Suitable for high-quality insulation and
  • Visually adaptable so that they can be integrated into different facades.

With BUG, you also benefit from the fact that the aluminium window sills can be combined with standardised accessories to form a window sill system. This enables safe and easy installation with individual configuration.

The basic properties are the same for both BUG window sills. They can both be combined with the usual accessories for window sill systems and, when installed as specified, both boast certified water tightness under heavy rain. Only the length of the drip edge and projection differ. The model you choose is simply a question of aesthetics.

The aluminium window sills from BUG are a standard fit. However, if they are set to be combined with other components of the window sill systems, you will receive detailed instructions for correct assembly. Water tightness under heavy rain is always guaranteed, as is the secure and safe hold of the window sill.

Basic cleaning of the window sills is required immediately after installation of the components. The cleaning intervals are dependent on the environmental impact on the sill. A general guideline is to clean aluminium window sills twice a year, or at least four times a year in the city.

The best way to clean aluminium window sills is to use a damp cloth or the soft side of a kitchen sponge and lukewarm water. You can remove stubborn dirt with a pH-neutral soap. Brushes, abrasive objects and hot water can damage the surface.

The result is corrosion and peeling of the surface finishing. Soaps with a high pH value react chemically with the aluminium surface and can attack it, causing the surface to become dull. Anodised window sills show stains and the paint layer on powder-coated window sills can come off. If the level of contamination is high enough that soap is no longer sufficient, a special cleaner made of aromatic-free hydrocarbons that is suitable for use on the anodised or powder-coated surfaces of the aluminium window sill can be used.

Our tip: First moisten the cloth and leave it on the window sill for a moment without using soap. After a short period of time, check whether the window sill is becoming dull or whether there is any visible damage caused by cleaning. If you would like to try a new cleaning agent, test it on a small, non-visible area beforehand to check whether it will react chemically with the aluminium window sill.
