A focus on social responsibility: BUG’s commitment to the environment and community
Social responsibility at BUG: Our operating principles
BUG has clear guidelines that serve as a compass for its approach to sustainability and social responsibility. We believe in a future in which entrepreneurial success is shaped by respect for people and nature. Whether through our promotion of inclusion and equal opportunities or our commitment to species diversity and biodiversity, our guidelines provide a map for every step of the way. Global action and local partnerships go hand in hand to create long-term values and ensure quality of life for future generations. The following are some of the most important guidelines:
Promoting young talent and equal opportunities
By working with organisations such as Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day, BUG supports the promotion of young talent and advocates for a fair working environment.
Preservation and promotion of biodiversity
Projects such as planting flowering meadows, installing nesting boxes and using our own beehives are intended to play a role in preserving biodiversity and reducing the ecological footprint.
Long-term social responsibility
BUG believes its responsibility extends far beyond our company gates and is actively committed to securing the future of coming generations. This includes continuous improvement in environmental compatibility and social support within and outside the company.
Promoting diversity, preserving nature – BUG’s social initiatives
We are committed to a greener future with projects that focus on environmental and species protection. We also invest in programmes to promote young talent with the aim of opening up prospects in technical careers and we continually strive to support the personal and professional development of our employees. In this way, BUG has created a corporate culture that promotes diversity and actively practices sustainability.

Commitment to the environment
BUG and STEP-G are actively committed to environmental and nature conservation, which is evident in endeavours like the “STEP Grassland” project at the Vogt location.. As part of this project, we oversee our own bee colony, which was recently moved to a protected shelter. A bee viewing area offers interested individuals the opportunity to observe the life of bees up close. We also installed an insect hotel as a refuge for wild bees and we maintain an orchard in which the flowers are pollinated by bees. Our nesting boxes have also proved to be popular with the local birds and are an important aid in species conservation. The project has thus allowed us to make an important contribution to preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental protection.
Commitment to promoting young talent
BUG is strongly committed to supporting young talent and offers a wide range of opportunities for young people to begin their professional lives. From apprenticeships or dual studies to internships, traineeships and working student jobs – we enable young people to gain practical experience and develop their potential in a dynamic environment. We are also actively involved in promoting young talent through participation in training fairs and Girls’ and Boys’ Days.

Participation in training fairs
STEP-G and BUG place great importance on being able to offer young people orientation and entry to the company through internships. Our teams regularly take part in training fairs such as “Talents in Dialogue” in the Rhein Sieg Forum in Siegburg and the education fair in the “Dr. Adolf Beck” metal laboratory in Bitterfeld. Both fairs are targeted at school students who wish to learn more about training opportunities and potential employers. Our teams are continuously holding talks and information events and are seeing high demand for internships.

Girls’ und Boys’ Day
As part of the STEP-G group of companies, BUG supports the Girls’ and Boys’ Day initiative. For example, on 25 April 2024, we welcomed several students to the Bitterfeld, Hettstedt and Bonn locations. The event was organised to give young people an insight into everyday working life and guidance for their career choices.
Girls’ Day, in particular, encourages young women to look into careers in the areas of IT, crafts and natural sciences, as women are currently underrepresented in these sectors. The aim is to encourage more women to take up these professions and to showcase the various potential career paths. At the same time, Boys’ Day offers young men the opportunity to discover careers that may not be among the typical choices for boys.
Commitment to our employees
At BUG, the focus is on employees – from targeted support for women to collaborative activities such as company runs and the popular Office Chair Cup. We strive to create a working environment that focuses on equal opportunities and team spirit and promote professional development and social interaction through various programmes. These initiatives not only strengthen the well-being and motivation of the workforce, but also help BUG to be an employer that actively supports and values the commitment of its employees.

Supporting women
At STEP-G and BUG, the support and promotion of women is a central part of our corporate culture. Through our collective agreement, we ensure that women and men with the same qualifications and positions always receive the same remuneration. In addition, we specifically focus on measures that support women in technical and scientific areas; these are areas in which women are often underrepresented. Our goal is to create an environment that supports women and offers them equal career opportunities. Via further education programmes, flexible working time models and targeted promotion of young talent, we want to ensure that all employees – regardless of their gender – fully reach their potential.

Company runs
BUG encourages its employees to be physically active and always endeavours to strengthen team spirit through company runs such as the Goitzsche Marathon. The team from Bitterfeld, for example, once again took part in the event in 2024, where they ran a distance of 10 km in picturesque surroundings.
Future company events are already in the pipeline to enable other employees to take part, including a run in Bonn’s Rheinaue and one in Vogt, Upper Swabia. With these initiatives, BUG not only promotes the health and fitness of its staff, but also encourages employees to foster a team spirit and sense of community within the company. Last but not least, part of the entry fee is also set to be donated to social causes.

Commitment to the industry
The group of companies made up by STEP-G and BUG is actively committed to the aluminium industry. This can be seen in their efforts to promote exchange and cooperation with industry associations such as Aluminium Deutschland e. V. (AD), EAA (European Aluminium Association) or the EBH (Euro-Baubeschlag Handel AG). When AD visited the Bonn location, guests were given an opportunity to learn more about the company and to gain an insight into production.
Visits like these are a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation in the industry and promote knowledge transfer in order to jointly address the challenges and opportunities of the aluminium industry.
