Sustainability at BUG: From aluminium recycling to certification

When I look at the past, BUG has become synonymous with tradition for me. A partner for trade and crafts in the here and now. And – looking to the future – for innovative, new products that also protect the environment.
Sustainability at BUG: A brief overview
The following are among the most important sustainability initiatives at BUG
Sustainable production
We manufacture all aluminium window sills, closures, and connectors, as well as wood-aluminium windows and weather protection rails for wooden windows, flat roofs, and facades with the aim of conserving resources. We pay close attention to the material cycle, short routes to guarantee “Made in Germany” quality and aluminium recycling.
Certified with the ASI seal
We have been awarded the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) seal for companies that work sustainably and responsibly – in ecological, social and economic terms.
Code of conduct
With the STEP-G group of companies, we have set down fundamental principles for the orientation of our holistic approach.
11 Sustainability Goals
We support the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2023.
Sustainability certificates
From our green policy for sending letters to our success in the EMAS environmental audit – our certificates are proof of our sustainable practices in all company processes.
Environmental statement
We have drawn up an environmental statement, which can be provided on request.
Environmental projects
We implemented the STEP Grassland project at our location in Vogt with an apiary, an insect hotel, bird nesting boxes and an orchard.
A look behind the scenes: Sustainability in our production
Consistent “Made in Germany” and “Made for Austria” quality, longevity and weather resistance are what set BUG Aluminium-Systeme apart from others across the added value supply chain. These strengths are what enable us to actively conserve resources and save CO2 throughout the entire process – achievements that would also not be possible without our local and regional partners.
Before production: Focus on material cycles
For us, sustainability and resource conservation starts even before production. We meticulously check the material cycle and technologies we use to develop and produce our sophisticated aluminium systems. That’s because we are acutely aware of their impact on the entire ecological system – from raw materials to manufacturing, finishing and packaging to recycling. We make no compromises when it comes to our high standards of quality, functionality, design, manufacturing and finishing. For us, there is simply no middle ground here.
During production: Made in Germany
We place great importance on a local and value-generating added value supply chain. Short routes within Germany reflect the highest quality of the material used. Through strict quality tests and in close cooperation with our partners, we guarantee nothing less than the highest quality for our aluminium systems.
After production: Aluminium recycling
Existing aluminium window sills, closures and connectors as well as aluminium profiles for wood-aluminium windows, wooden windows, facades and flat roofs can be returned to the material cycle and reused at any time. And all without any loss of quality. At the same time, other raw materials offer great durability, such as the wood used in our wood-aluminium windows
ASI seal for high sustainability standards
We are particularly proud to have been awarded the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) seal and certification. This internationally recognised certification system aims to promote sustainability standards in the aluminium industry. It covers various aspects of aluminium production and supply chain, including:
REACH and RoHS compliance for high environmental and safety standards
Our commitment to sustainability includes compliance with REACH and RoHS regulations. These EU directives ensure that our products are free from harmful chemicals and comply with the highest environmental and safety standards. By strictly adhering to these regulations, we not only protect the environment, but also the health of our partners and employees. Sustainable and compliant solutions offer a secure future.
We hereby confirm the conformity of the product services applied and delivered by the STEP-G Group under the BUG Aluminium-Systeme brand. Download the Declaration of Conformity now.
The BUG Code of Conduct
We have drawn up a comprehensive Code of Conduct in the STEP-G Group. This code represents the fundamental principles for the orientation of our holistic approach within the scope of our business activities. We at BUG Aluminium-Systeme assume responsibility for our impacts on the global economic and holistic environmental system and in the STEP-G group of companies. We are dedicated to a sustainable future in all of these areas.

Our sustainability certificates
We don’t just talk about sustainability; we strive to actively implement it. In addition to the ASI seal and ASI certification, we are the proud recipient of other important sustainability seals, such as the EMAS certificate. The EMAS certificate (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a voluntary standard for environmental management and auditing established by the European Union that helps companies and organisations improve their environmental performance. It goes beyond other standards such as ISO 14001 as it imposes additional requirements for transparency and environmental performance.

Pure nature: The STEP grassland projects
As part of the STEP-G group of companies, we launched our STEP Grassland project at our location in Vogt a few years ago. In addition to an apiary, we also have an insect hotel, which has become a familiar haunt of wild bees, offering them a much-needed refuge.
Our orchard is also developing beautifully and our bees have been busy pollinating the flowers. We are looking forward to our first small harvest of fruit and honey. Our bird nesting boxes have also proved to be popular among local birds, with some of the first hatchlings having already emerged.
We are proud that our STEP Grassland project has permitted us to play an active part in the conservation of animal and plant species and in the preservation of nature and the environment.
Our 11 sustainability goals
From processes to manufacturing, in our day-to-day work and actions we strive to focus on sustainable product development and sustainable innovations. That is why we at BUG, together with STEP-G, support and promote 11 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2023.

Good health & well-being
- The most important resources within BUG are health and resilience. We invest in the maintenance and promotion of health and resilience so that we will be prepared for the challenges of the world in the future, so that we can act quickly and so that we can respond flexibly and rapidly to the highly dynamic development of the working environment.

- Our appreciative working environment promotes a positive working atmosphere and cooperation. Transparent information flow and open, active communication at eye level are fundamental to creating a positive working atmosphere.
- To realise the great potential of the people in the company, we promote our managers and employees from the outset.
- Occupational health and safety is firmly integrated into all phases and procedures of our processes and our work system.
- Group-wide standardised and software-supported health-safety-environment processes lead to continuous improvement in health, sustainability and working environment performance.
- Protecting the health and safety of all employees and visitors is a top priority. Each and every one of us must perform our activities safely and carefully to prevent accidents and impairments to health. BUG, together with STEP-G, has resolved to design employees’ workplaces so that they are safer and healthier in all respects. Continuous analyses provide the basis for safe machine systems, technical procedures and work processes. The health and safety of employees during their free time is another area we continue to focus on. It is the reason action and support programs are an integral part of BUG.

Quality education
- Irrespective of gender, background or other personal factors, we support and develop our specialist personnel and managers. We strive to continually offer training and further education opportunities.
- We are a long-standing and experienced training enterprise. We offer apprenticeships and further training programmes and are keen to give youngsters the chance to grow with us.
- The training we provide is highly specialised, our goal being to pass on our knowledge to employees and business partners.

Gender equality
- Together with STEP-G, we at BUG are committed to equal opportunities and personnel development.
- One of our most important goals in terms of gender equality is to support the people in our company on an equal level and to encourage women to take up technical professions.

Affordable & clean energy
- BUG product solutions make an important contribution to improvement, protection of the building envelope, upgrading and the sustainability of every building object. This also results in an improvement in energy efficiency gegeben.
- The constant further development measures in our production and continuous improvements in our energy efficiency boosts our competitiveness, which in turn secures jobs. This supports our goal of affordable and clean energy.

Decent work & economic growth
- As part of our health management within the STEP-G group of companies, our staff benefit from extras such as sports programmes, gyms, health days and other events.
- For us, creating and improving decent workplaces is second nature. We take our social responsibility seriously and have thus anchored our goals in the EMAS environmental statement. Our code of conduct, which we share with STEP-G, demands the same commitment from our suppliers.

Industry, innovation & infrastructure
- Our product solutions and technologies form the basis for sustainable technological development across the added value supply chain. Innovations for windows, facades and roofs with conservatories and roofing, protection and durability as well as the recyclability of our solutions are the prerequisite for a sustainable product life cycle.
- The continuous optimisation of our processes as well as machines and systems contribute to resource conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
- BUG’s decentralised structure and close integration into the STEP-G group of companies ensures customer-oriented supply, customer-centric service and sustainable industrialisation.

Sustainable cities & communities

- We also enjoy the extensive biodiversity of various plants at our locations.

Peace, justice & strong institutions
- The STEP-G Legal Compliance System forms the basis for our consistent, uncompromising adherence to statutory regulations and also internal regulations which go even further.
- We also expect this commitment from our supply chain. We therefore also pass these on to our suppliers via the Code of Conduct.
- We have established a confidential reporting system in accordance with the Whistleblowing Policy, which provides every employee with a safe opportunity to report any deviations and non-compliance within the company.
